St Austell and Newquay Liberal Democrats are delighted to introduce their new Chairman, Garth Shephard.
Garth, pictured above with former MP Stephen Gilbert, said "In his 2016 State of the Union address, Barack Obama said:
"Will we respond to the changes of our time with fear, turning inward? Or will we face the future with confidence in who we are, in what we stand for, in the incredible things that we can do together?"
We are members of a special club. Our liberal and democratic values are unique in British politics. Incredible things are possible, but only if we work together. Fighting back requires everyone to join in.
We should be proud to represent a party which has held stong and consistent views about what matters. We should not apologise for a period in government where our MPs acquitted themselves professionally and constrained the worst of Tory policy. Now we see what happens when the Conservatives govern alone.
Cornwall is the victim of unrepresentative national policies in housing, environment and regional funding. This needs to be clear for all to see. We must ensure no one escapes this realisation. Cornwall also benefits from membership of the European Union more than any other region in the country. We must explain why, and promote this reality.
Through better understanding our membership and increasing numbers, building active branches, consolidating strong and up-to-date communication channels and getting better press coverage, we will convince the electorate that we can improve their lives.
We need not just react to circumstances. Together we can set the agenda and rise to the challenges that result."
