Stephen Gilbert, the Liberal Democrat MP, for St Austell & Newquay has welcomed over £1million in funding for six schools in his constituency as part of package of school improvements that have been announced by the Government.

Tywardreath School, Trenance Learning Academy, Newquay Junior Academy, St Columb Minor Academy, St Mewan Community Primary School, Biscovey Academy, Bishop Bronescombe CofE School Fowey River Academy are each set to benefit from a share of a £370m million school buildings fund.

Stephen Gilbert said, “This announcement is great news.  Good school buildings are vital to making sure that more children and young people in our area receive a first class education.  The local schools will receive money from the Condition Improvement Fund and I’m grateful that Ministers have been listening to what I’ve said about the need for investment in our local schools."

Liberal Democrat Schools Minister David Laws MP said:

“Liberal Democrats want to carry on investing in our school buildings to give every child the best possible start in life.  Conservative plans would mean huge cuts for schools – ripping apart the coalition’s efforts to improve school buildings and condemning children to crumbling classrooms and out dated facilities.”

As Parliament is shortly to be dissolved MP Stephen Gilbert added:

“I’ve been working up to the wire to make a difference in my community and today’s £1million extra comes on top of yesterday’s announcement of 150 new jobs in St Austell thanks to Government investment.”
